Artist Brief - Boscombe art project

On 24th April 2010, Bournemouth Borough Council will be putting on an event that will honour the support that the community of Boscombe have dedicated to the building of the artificial surf reef and the redevelopment of Boscombe seafront. As the project is now finished and is a great success, Bournemouth Borough Council would like to thank the community and celebrate the successes that have already been apparent in Boscombe. An artist is required to run participatory arts workshops at this event. Deadline for applications - 15th March.

The brief
Bournemouth Borough Council and the RELAYS (Regional Educational Legacy for Arts and Youth Sport) project are seeking to recruit a professional participatory artist to create a sculpture of the ‘bare bones’ of a whale that can be added to by members of the public, including young people, throughout the day of the event using beach litter, under the guidance of the artist.

The inspiration behind the idea of the whale sculpture comes from 1897 when a whale was washed up on a nearby beach. The bones of the whale were then mounted on a frame at the end of Boscombe pier, until it was removed in 1904. Since 2010 marks Bournemouth’s Bicentenary, the Council would like to see a piece of participatory art which has a reference to its heritage. The artwork will be exhibited at the end of Boscombe pier during the event.

We are keen to receive applications from the Poole / Bournemouth conurbation and welcome applications from Dorset, as we are committed to supporting our local artists.
