Volunteers required at English Heritage sites - Stonehenge and Old Sarum

Would you like to help bring heritage to life at Stonehenge and Old Sarum? The English Heritage Education team is looking for volunteers to help meet and greet educational groups of all ages and nationalities at Stonehenge and to assist with Discovery Visits (interactive workshops) for school children aged 8-12 at Old Sarum.

In 2012 the visitor facilities at Stonehenge are changing. As part of the preparation process for the new Visitor Centre, we are looking for volunteers to take part in a pilot volunteering programme at Stonehenge and Old Sarum.

At Stonehenge, Volunteers will meet education groups arriving at the site, help the teacher to orientate around the site and give a 5-10 introductory talk before the teachers lead their own educational activities at the stones. Education groups visiting the site are of all ages and nationalities, although the majority are aged 13-16 years and come from schools in mainland Europe. Volunteers will have the opportunity to develop their talk in partnership with the education team and other volunteers.

At Old Sarum, Volunteers will support site staff in the delivery of ‘Invaders and Settlers at Old Sarum’ and interactive tour exploring the history of the site from the Iron Age to the medieval period. Tasks will include supervising of the movement of children around the site, preparing resources for each session and tidying at the end of each session, assisting site staff in the delivery of activities such as role play and archaeology handling and assisting the site team in evaluating the effectiveness of the session.

We are looking for volunteers who possess enthusiasm for working with people of all ages and nationalities, especially children and young people, are flexible and adaptable, have excellent communication skills and the ability to work in team with site staff and volunteers. We support the training and development of all volunteers and ask all volunteers to participate in training as required and, if requested, in the training of other volunteers. We reimburse reasonable travel expenses.

Enthusiasm, an interest in working with children and young people and good communication skills are essential. Full training and support will be provided.

If you are interested in these opportunities, please contact Beccy Brough, Education Liaison Officer, to register your interest and request a registration pack and further information about the roles.
