Esmee Fairbairn Foundation

The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation aims to improve the quality of life throughout the UK, by funding the charitable activities of organisations (not individuals) that have the ideas and ability to achieve change for the better. Primary interests are in the cultural life of the UK, education and learning, the natural environment and enabling disadvantaged people to participate more fully in society.

Normally the Foundation only considers applications from registered charities although other organisations may be considered if the purpose of the project is charitable.

Funding is channeled through two routes
:

Main Fund
- distributiing about two-thirds of their funding. It is responsive to requests for support across the broad range of the Foundations interests. Work is proritised which: addresses a significant gap in provision; develops or strengthens good practice; challenges convention or takes a risk in order to address a difficult issue; tests out new ideas or practices; takes an enterprising approach to achieving its aims; and/ or sets out to influence policy or change behaviour more widely.

Strands - funds can also be allocated to specific strands of work. These will change over time, but overall they need to make a contribution in particular areas of interest, which are currently - Biodiversity; Food; Museum & Heritage Collections; and New Approaches to Learning. There is a separate application process for the Strands fund.

Applications are to be made in writing and you must read the guidelines before applying to find out about specific funding priorities. Guidelines and further details are available at www.esmeefairbairn.org.uk
