First Light Movies Funds

First Light is the UK’s leading initiative enabling young people to realise their potential via creative digital film and media projects. It funds and inspires film projects with five to 19 year-olds throughout the UK through a number of youth funding schemes including: The Young Film Fund distributing £1.1 million pounds of UKFC National Lottery cash each year, Mediabox and Second Light.

Since launching in 2001, First Light have enabled over 12,000 budding young filmmakers to write, act, shoot, light, direct and produce over 800 films. Working with filmmakers and organisations, First Light films cover a diverse range of topics and genres, and make use of accessible digital film technology.

 - The Young Film Fund: The UK Film Council’s Lottery funded filmmaking initiative for five to 19 year olds. There are three schemes available: Script Grant, funding for script writing projects that team young people with script professionals. Maximum grant available is £3,000, and 10% match funding is required. Pilot Grant, funding for one short film of up to five minutes in duration. Maximum grant available is £5,000, and 20% in-kind match funding is required. And the Studio Grant, funding for between two and four films of up to 10 minutes in duration. Maximum grant available is £30,000, and 40% match funding is required.

- Mediabox: A Department for Children, Schools and Families fund to help young people have a positive voice in the media. It offers disadvantaged 13-19 year olds the opportunity to develop and produce creative media projects, using film, print, television, radio or online platforms. - Second Light: A talent development scheme providing production based training, which will give 30 talented young people aged 18 – 23, from BME backgrounds, supported opportunities to move into the film industry. With the backing of industry partners including Pinewood Studios and BAFTA, Second Light will provide these young filmmakers with bespoke training, work placements and mentoring over a sustained period of 18 months.
