Background Information on the Arts Award:

What is the Arts Award?
The Arts Award is a national qualification which recognises how young people aged 11-25 develop as artists and arts leaders. The award is a personal learning programme which develops and assesses both arts-related skills (arts knowledge and understanding) and transferable skills (creativity, communication, planning and review, teamwork and leadership).

The award is a QCA qualification and sits on the National Qualifications Framework at levels 1, 2 and 3 (in Arts Award speak, levels Bronze, Silver & Gold). It is on the learning aims database. The award is assessed through a portfolio of evidence created by the young person, evidence can be presented in ANY format. The award does not judge artistic talent, but accredits a creative journey and personal development from that particular young person's starting point.

How do you get involved?
Young people need access to a qualified Arts Award Adviser to guide them through the Award. Advisers are key to the success of the award, as they act as catalysts, mentors and internal assessors for young people. Most advisers are already working with young people - as artists, arts teachers, youth arts facilitators or youth workers. To train as an Adviser at Bronze & Silver Levels costs £100 and is a one day training course.

What are the costs?
Each young person will need a set of award materials when they start. The sets cost around £5 per young person, and are cheaper when bought in packs of five. Moderation costs are £12 per head for Bronze, £15 for Silver and £25 for Gold. Centres pay when they book their moderation.
