The State of Design in the Art and Design Curriculum

A day conference for teachers and lecturers of art and design and interested practitioners, to coincide with the exhibition: James Bradley - Artist and Teacher.

Relevant to all phases of education, we are certain that participants will gain lots of ideas to take back the staff and classroom. We do however suggest that the day is best suited to art and design specialists.

Context:
James Bradley pioneered the Basic Design Course at Sidcott School, Bristol.  Its development had a significant impact on the course of art and design education in the 1960’s.  James Bradley’s photography and notes were used extensively in the landmark series of slide and film packs produced for schools by Visual Publications. 

The exhibition and presentations by a number of speakers – including both new and long serving teachers, a designer and an architect – will stimulate a series of open and group discussions interrogating the exhibition and the current state of design education in schools, including: What has been lost or gained in the last ten years?  What does design education currently focus on and achieve?  Is it informing young peoples’ view of the world and does it support understanding and design solutions to the problems they will face in twenty years time?
